* * *

Even though Oscar had spent the entire weekend at Danny’s house, Laura looked surprised to see him when she opened the door early Monday morning in response to his knock.

“Good morning,” he said cheerfully, holding out a box of breakfast pastries and following her into the kitchen.

“Danny’s still sleeping, and Chad just left for school.” She poured him a cup of coffee without asking, remembering the three spoonsful of sugar he preferred, and brought out a couple of plates for the pastries.

“And what about you? You also have classes today, no?”

“Yeah, but… I’m not going.”

“Go. I’ll take care of Danny.”

Laura gave him a suspicious look. “Oscar, why exactly are you here?”

He knew she didn’t disapprove and it warmed him to see her so protective toward Danny. He wouldn’t want to come between this one and someone she loved. He grinned, something he’d been doing a lot of in this house.

“According to my brother, you’re a pretty big deal,” she went on when he didn’t answer fast enough. “And frankly, I’m still not sure exactly how you and Danny know each other. You seem like a great guy, Oscar, but to be honest — um, no offense — I’m not entirely comfortable leaving him with you.”

“You are a good friend to him, Laura.”

“And you still haven’t answered my question.”

Oscar looked away, uncomfortable with the idea of putting his feelings into words. The truth was, he still didn’t know Danny. Not well. He only knew that Danny was braver than he was, and full of love for the people he cared about. And that every time he looked in the other man’s eyes, he didn’t ever want to look away.

Although he’d spent most of the weekend at the house, Danny had been out of it — sleeping or medicated, or both — for most of that time. And before that… what? He’d spent an hour with him the day they’d met? He’d kissed him? So sweetly that his heart had hurt and his cock had become instantly hard, but still, just a kiss. None of that sounded compelling enough to justify the irresistible pull he felt toward the younger man. How could he explain his need to be with Danny when he didn’t understand it himself?

“Chad says you’re gay,” Laura said, forcing him to meet her eyes again.

“Sí.” She’d left him alone with Danny, but she hadn’t seen the result. Oscar hadn’t touched him in front of his family. At least, not much. That was for Danny to share if wanted to. “I’m not going to attack your chick, Mama Hen,” Oscar said softly. “Right now, I just need to be where his is. I’m sorry. I cannot explain it any better.”

He could tell by the look she gave him that that wasn’t good enough. He ran a hand through his short hair, wishing for a moment that he were out on the field. “When I met Danny, I wanted to stay away.”

Laura’s frown deepened. That hadn’t come out right.

“I mean, I am here for just a little while, in San Francisco.
